Josiah as a 60 Lb pig was saved from the castration knife the weekend after Howard Newlin was killed in a tractor accident in January 1999. His mother was the 53-1 Hawkins 9-2 sow which had farrowed her 19th litter in which Josiah was raised. He was used 1 year at the Bierman farm before he was sold to a commercial farm where he was used for 4 years. His sire Boulder was a 1998 NBS Super Sire. This pen had one of the highest Daily gains and also Meat Quality scores of any Hampshire pens tested. Josiah was a step in making Hampshire’s very thick without making them small. Josiah DNA was used to make the DNA test for Hampshire Purity. He was still breeding sows up to the age of 9 years old.
